Goals Focus Tips

Here’s our thoughts on what NOT to focus on or aim for when looking to make changes/progress…

What other people are doing / the pace they’re doing it / how they look

Why?

Other people are not you! They will be very different, possibly have different goals, different levels of time, money, knowledge and commitment. They may not be looking at a long term healthy solution. Someone else’s progress, goals or appearance, should have no impact on you. You can’t compare incomparable’s.

A particular size, shape or weight

Why?

This may not be a realistic achievable goal. It may not be right or healthy for you. Even if you’ve been a certain weight, size or shape before, that’s not to say it’s right, achievable or healthy for you now.

A specific event as an ‘End point’

Why?

Having an event can be a good motivator. However, having this as your ‘end goal’ can set you up for aiming for a short term solution rather than a long term one. What happens at the ‘end’? Generally this will see people just going back to their previous lifestyle that they wanted to change as they’ve ‘achieved the goal and can stop’.

Your goal being your happiness

Why?

Changes that you make can certainly bring you lot’s of happiness and positivity. However, having the mindset that I’ll be happy when I get to ‘xyz’ very rarely happens. It’s much more effective and sustainable to seek happiness through positives, the small achievements and changes along the way.

Unrealistic Expectations

Why?

Setting yourself completely unrealistic targets will have the opposite effect. If you can’t hit any of the goals you set, you will become very downbeat, fell like you’ve failed and will not seek out the positives, if they aren’t anywhere near the unrealistic expectation set. Which then in turn make you think ‘what’s the point’ despite the fact that you could have actually been achieving quite a lot, but not giving yourself the recognition for this.

Basically, any goals that you set, should come from you and not from anyone else. They should be realistic and you need to be able to breakdown larger goals into smaller ones, so that you can still achieve the bigger goals, but also, be proud of the smaller ones along the way.
